Making the world nervous

During a speech at UCLA, ex-CIA director James Woolsey told the gathering of three hundred that we are now in a 4th World War — the cold war being the 3rd — and that that should make the people in the middle east nervous, because we are going to back democratic movements. Here are some excerpts, as reported on the CNN site:

bq. “As we move toward a new Middle East, over the years and, I think, over the decades to come … we will make a lot of people very nervous.”

bq. “We want you nervous [Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and the leaders of Saudi Arabia]. We want you to realize now, for the fourth time in a hundred years, this country and its allies are on the march and that we are on the side of those whom you — the Mubaraks, the Saudi Royal family — most fear: We’re on the side of your own people.”

Woolsey, who seems to have an inside track on a job in the “reconstruction” of Iraq, was making the speech at UCLA as part of a teach-in sponsored by the right-wing group Americans For Victory Over Terrorism. I presume that people who don’t agree with how this “victory” is achieved are not real americans. The organization is another project by the uber-scary William Bennett, who is also trying to sell his book, _Why We Fight_.
